KAILUA-KONA — Hawaii Island Police made 18 DUI arrests islandwide during the first week of May, according to stats released Tuesday.
South Hilo netted the most arrests with 11. Kona came in second with four. Puna had three. All other districts had zero, according to a graph on the Hawaii Police Department website.
According to a Hawaii police press release, three of the motorists were involved in a traffic accident.
DUI arrests have increased year-to-date with 418 this year compared to 384 last year, the release indicated.
However, stats show a 5.25 decrease in major accidents with 495 crashes this year compared with 521 last year.
Also to date, the release reports, there were 10 fatal crashes resulting in 10 fatalities. Last year there were nine fatal crashes, which ended in 10 fatalities.
